OESP Honors its Own

OESP (National Association of Oil & Energy Service Professionals) hosted its annual awards banquet during the inaugural Eastern Energy Expo held at Foxwoods Resort Casino, Mashantucket, CT. The Awards Banquet was held on Tuesday, May 24. The evening began with convention chairman, Jay Moser recognizing all our sponsors and introduced the new Executive Director of OESP, Lisa Strug and Jonathan Jaffe of Jaffe Communications.  The evening was then turned over to the MC for the evening, Dan Holohan.

These well deserving individuals and companies were recognized for their excellence and dedication to our industry:

Service Manager of the Year: Mike Hodge, Griffith Energy, Frederick MD

The 2016 Dave Nelsen Scholarship winners were introduced:

Shaun Maher, winner of the Weil-McLain/OESP Award, Jason Wakefield, Beckett/OESP Award, Devin Laliberte received the New Haven Chapter/OESP Award, Michael Boylston was awarded the Honeywell/OESP Award and Thomas Daros the Mid-Atlantic Chapter/OESP Award.


Funding for the Scholarship

The Dave Nelsen Scholarship Golf Tournament took place on Monday, May 23 at the Elmridge Golf Course, Pawcatuck. This tournament, chaired by George Fantacone, R.I. Chapter, is the only fundraiser for the scholarship fund. Since its founding in 1999, almost $300,000 in scholarships have been awarded to students interested in pursuing careers in the energy-service industry.

This year’s event netted almost $17,000.00. Thanks go to the golfers, the 30 tee box sponsors, key sponsors, AVATAS Payment Solutions, Carlin/Hydrolevel, Demers Events and Expo Services, Oilheat Associates and FMA.

2015 OESP Award Winners

Service Manager of the Year: George Fantacone, Santoro Oil, Providence, Rhode Island and member of the Rhode Island Chapter is presented this award by Bob Daros of the Westchester Chapter. George is a National V.P. and chair of the Membership Committee. George also chairs our annual Dave Nelsen Scholarship Tournament.

Hugh W. McKee Memorial Award goes to Charles Holmes, J.W. Pierson Company, Glen Ridge, NJ. Charles is a very active member of the Garden State Chapter having served on all board positions. He served as President from 2008-2011. He is on the Financial Committee of the Association and is the sales manager for J.W. Pierson.

Lou Ehrich Memorial Associate of the Year Award: George Pavlik, Plimpton & Hills, Danbury, CT.

George is a member of the CT Valley and New Haven Chapters. George is known to many of his customers as the guy to go to for assistance because whether he knows the correct answer or not, he will get them that need correct answer.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Judy Garber, Executive Director of the Association. Presenters include past presidents, Bob Boltz and Scott Hinkley (presenting). Judy has been with the Association since 1999.

2013 OESP Award Winners

At our 60th Anniversary convention and trade show, these individuals received our 2013 Awards:


Hugh McKee Award:

This year it was a tie between Charlie Bursey, Rhode Island Chapter & Paul Cuprewich, Garden State Chapter.

Charlie began his career in the oil heating industry in 1963 and worked for 22 years delivering coal, kerosene, oil and he also serviced heating equipment. 1989 he became the GM/Service Manager for a company in Eastern CT and helped to start that chapter. In addition to working for F.W. Webb, he writes a column for Fuel Oil News and works as a salesman for F.W. Webb. He served as the president of the Rhode Island Chapter for 4 years. He has a passion for the industry is well known.

Paul Cuprewich is the Service Manager for Woolley Fuel, Maplewood, NJ. He served in all offices within his chapter and chairs their education committee. He is also a director on the board of Oil heat Cares and has spearheaded a number of projects. He holds an electrician’s license, Silver and Gold certificates. Ongoing education is something that Paul feels strongly about.


Instructor of the Year:

Angel Gonzalez, New York City Chapter.

Angel is a member of the New York City Chapter and currently serves as the chapter president. Angel has been involved with High School Technical Schools for a number of years; serving as the National Liaison for the past couple of years. He also is a National V.P. He is an employee of Petro, Maspeth, NY.


Lifetime Achievement Award:

Steve Rinaldo, Westchester Chapter.

Steve Rinaldo has held almost every office within his chapter. Steve is employed by Automatic Heating Supply, Yonkers, NY. Steve is involved with their scholarship committee and serves as the liaison between his chapter and their adopted trade schools. Steve is simply one of those behind the scenes guys that make it happen.


Lou Ehrich Award:

Rick Glownia, JAD Associates, CT Valley Chapter.

Rick is a very dedicated professional. He has been the secretary for the CT Valley chapter for many years and elected secretary of the New Haven chapter in September 2012. He has a true talent for coordinating events and communicating to members. He has spearheaded tech nights at the ICPA School in CT and coordinated trips to local factories. He’s a leader when it comes to fundraising and encouraging others.

Service Manager of the Year: Bob Daros, Heritage Fuel, Westchester Chapter. Bob is an owner and working service manager of his company. He is involved in his community and has been an active member of his chapter for over sixteen years. He served as president and is active on the education and scholarship committees within his chapter.

2012 OESP Award Winners

Instructor of the Year

Rick Taylor

Rick is an Associate Professor of HVAC at Pennsylvania College of Technology, Williamsport, PA. He teaches oil heat, steam as well as solar thermal, hydronics and environmental impacts of the HVAC industry and he is co-department head of the HVAC department.

Rick is the secretary of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter. Members validate the fact that Rick continually strives to bring the latest technologies to his students. With his commitment to education excellence, he has helped produce 11 Dave Nelsen scholarship winners.


Lou Ehrich Award

Phillip Schwartz

Phil followed his father’s footsteps (Nat) in the wholesale business. He serves as the treasurer of the Long Island Oilheating & Cooling Chapter and a strong supporter of Oil Heat Cares, including riding in the annual Care to Ride event. Phil is known for his support of his customers by “never” closing the doors during the heating season. He is a strong supporter of education, offering product training regularly at his business in North Bellmore, NY.


Service Manager of the Year

Matt Spink

Matt is co-chair of the Education Committee for National and the president of his chapter, the Long Island Oilheating and Cooling Professionals.

He is the Service Manager for Platinum Energy. He teaches the Introduction of Oilheat at the local community college and he has developed and taught a class on commercial oil burners as well.

Matt is one of those guys that can be counted upon for anything. He is also one of those guys that you hear before you see him – but always with a smile on his face.


Hugh McKee Award

Jay Moser

Jay is the service manager for Harris Comfort, Bristol, PA. He is the president of his chapter, the Bucks-Mont Chapter and is co-chair of the Convention Committee. He is also very active with the Hulmeville Fire Company and during the winter you can find him at Flyers games.

Jay received his training from the PPMCSA School and today supervises 15 technicians. Harris is a full service HVAC company that sells both oil and propane. Jay is both NATE and NORA certified.


Manufacturer of the Year

Tekmar, a Canadian controls manufacturer, is another fine example of what the Awards Committee looks for with regards to a nominee – their commitment to sharing the knowledge. Tekmar notes that they have had over 10,000 customers attend tekmar Control Schools.


Lifetime Achievement Award

John Levey

John is one of those guys who lives and breathes oil heat. He owned his own company, a key manager for one of the largest companies and now owns his own consulting company. Knowing that oil tanks often are the route of oil related problems, he identified a need for a program so that our industry could take a proactive approach to Tank management. He worked with NORA to develop the Tank Certification Program and has delivered many classes on this topic.

Of all the things that John does, teaching and motivating others to stretch their talents is probably one of his strongest attributes.

2011 OESP Award Winners

At its annual Awards Banquet held during the Association’s annual convention & trade show, May 22-26th, Hershey Lodge & Convention Center, the Award Winners were announced.


Instructor of the Year

Ralph Adams

Ralph is the Executive Vice President of OESP and is the service manager for Parker Fuel Co., Ellicott City, MD. Ralph is a co-chairman of our national Education Committee and is instrumental in the development of our Train-the-Trainer program. He was an instructor for Baltimore County Community College, Catonsville, MD where he prepared students to take the NORA (National Oil Heat Research Alliance) Silver Certification program. Ralph was the recipient of the 2006 Service Manager of the Year award and served as the President and Treasurer of his chapter, the Mid Atlantic Service Managers Association.


Lou Ehrich Award

Robert Perotto

Robert is a member of the New York City Chapter. He has been active in the oil heat industry for 49 years. Bob is a NYS licensed professional engineer and volunteers to do training classes, tutoring and mentoring to hundreds of technicians, service manager and owners so they can pass the NYC oil equipment installer’s license exam. He is a longtime member of the chapter and chairman of their nominating committee. He has volunteered his time on several Oil Heat Cares projects and assists the chapter with education and high school student activities.


Service Manager of the Year

Joe Boyle

Joe owns his company, Boyles Heating and Cooling, Quakertown, PA. He has been active in the Lehigh Valley Chapter for 30 years and always interested in education for himself and his employees. Joe got his taste of petroleum when in the Air Force but upon leaving the military he enrolled in barber school. The mid 70’s brought change that resulted in people not needing a barber and Joe figured people will always need heat. He wanted to learn about oil burners so enrolled in the Upper Bucks Tech School. While working at Agway, he met Bill Nice, a long-time member of NAOHSM and that was Joe’s entry into the association. He served as a chapter president for many years. Membership in the Lehigh Valley Chapter has grown and is a testament to Joe’s desire to have regular informative and educational meetings.

George McQueeney

George is the National President and member of the New Haven Chapter where he serves as the chapter treasurer. He has been active in his chapter since 1978. He is the service manager for East River Energy, Guilford, CT. George has spearheaded a couple of Oil Heat Cares projects and is a board member of OHC. He also sits on the school’s advisory board of Independent CT Petroleum Association as well as the advisory board of Vinyl Tech. He is also an active member of the Killingworth Lion’s Club where was awarded the CT Knight of the Blink, Lion of the Year (twice) and president for two years. George got his start in the family business while in grammar school, helping on an oil truck during snow days and winter breaks from school. At age 15, George was servicing oil burners.

Honeywell

Honeywell is a Corporate Member of NAOHSM and a strong supporter of education. For a number of years, they have supported our scholarship program by co-sponsoring an award and a major supporter of our Care to Ride that directly funds Oil Heat Cares. Honeywell always supports our tech schools by providing products.


Lifetime Achievement Award

Michael Szentesy

This special award was presented to Mike Szentesy. Mike was a long-time employee of Suntec and involved in the Oilheating industry for over 39 years. Mike is a member of 10 NAOHSM chapters and doesn’t just pay his dues; he attends many meetings and is always available for training. He has a keen understanding what his customers need and works hard to deliver. He has served as the chairman of the burner section of AHRI, treasurer of NAOHSM, president of OMA, vice-chairman of the GAMA and chairman of the burner division of the Hydronics Institute. He is well known, competent and a good friend to many. Mike is moving on to the next chapter of his career by joining Mitco Manufacturing a division of Sid Harvey Industries.
